Abstract
Balwant Singh, despite his relative obscurity as compared to Rajinder Singh Bedi and Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, does shine out as a great fiction writer of Urdu literature. His forte is depiction of his beloved Punjab.,Punjab which is his main subject as well as his mother land. We find him in his element when he opens the door of his imagination to bring home to the reader the sights and sounds of the Punjab, the flora and fauna, the way of life of ordinary yet distinct Punjabis open up to the reader in his pages. However, he doesn’t portray an ideal or romantic picture of the Punjab in his short stories or in his novels. Like any creative artist, he invites the reader to form his or her own impressions of life of Punjabi people, he only assists them through deft handling of his stories and smooth, suggestive touches. Life in its myriad shades comes out alive in his pages. Love, hatred, egoism, deception and depravity, social and economic exploitation, sexual complexities all have been brought out by him to create a collage of images, at once soft and emphatic. The reader feels part of the action as he effortlessly bring him ever nearer to his experience. In this article, effort has been made to open the reader to the hum drum of life of rural Punjab, with all its beauty, intricacy and sublime charm. Only a consummate artist like Balwant Singh, proud son of the Punjab could do it. He has certainly made his motherland proud through his writings.
