Abstract

In compiling dictionary of a language like that of Punjabi, philology & lexicography rightfully go hand-in-hand. Punjabi-Urdu dictionary of Sardar Muhammad Khan stands foremost among the contemporary works of its kind since he hasn’t merely collected the words but he’s a connoisseur who knows the science and culture of words. Philologists & lexicographers usuallly go deep down to the levels of morpheme and phonemes but Sardar sb has gone many extra miles. He examines every feature of a word and headword, and lets the reader know about the formation, spelling, origin, usage, and definition of the entry.

In defining and finding relationships that exist between words, this lexicon of Punjabi language, like few other dictionaries, is composed of lexemes which are abstract units of meaning that correspond to a set of related forms of a word. Together, the careful reader can traverse the backward route, ie, learning that how words can be broken down into meaningful/ unmeaningful units and can identify common patterns which these words follow. Collocations are feathers in the cap of Punjabi, and Sardar sb has left no stone unturned in stacking-up and explaining the very essence of Punjabi collocations. On account of such startling academic features of this Punjabi lexicon I rate it as the Punjabi Body of Knowledge (PBoK). I’ve tried to critically examine the general arrangement of entries and have found the key psychological impetus behind compilation of this dictionary. Figuring out a number of rooms for improvement, and giving examples from the lexis within, I’ve concluded by giving workable suggestions of automating this dictionary and of providing a unicode-enabled Gurmukhi auto-transliteration handle in the software so that the reach of this dictionary overrides the script & language barrier.
